JUST IN: Denver Broncos Quarterback Officially Announces Shock Departure After A Crisis With The Management

The Broncos’ first-round selection is already showing why he was so highly regarded.

During his early practices with Denver, rookie cornerback Jahdae Barron has confirmed the scouting reports that led the Broncos to draft him. Head Coach Sean Payton noted that Barron is displaying the same qualities they saw on film during the pre-draft process.

“He’s exactly who we thought he was — smart and instinctive,” Payton said. “He’s got quick reactions and sticks with receivers in coverage. He’s sharp when it comes to understanding formations and route tendencies, which is rare in a young player. He already has a veteran’s sense of awareness.”

Barron, who won the 2024 Jim Thorpe Award as college football’s top defensive back, is back on the field for the first time since January and is soaking up the transition to the NFL.

“I’m adjusting and learning the schemes and how NFL offenses move — all the motion and shifting,” Barron said. “It’s a process, but I’m taking it all in.”

Broncos QBs Coach Davis Webb Recognized as a Rising Star in the NFL

After being taken in the third round, wide receiver Pat Bryant has drawn favorable comparisons from Payton, who likened his game to that of former Saints star Michael Thomas.

Bryant appreciated the praise but emphasized his desire to establish his own identity.

“It’s great to hear, but I’m focused on being the best version of myself,” Bryant said. “I want to make my own mark.”

Bryant’s ability to win contested catches was on full display during Saturday’s practice, reinforcing his value in tight coverage situations.

“When that ball’s in the air, I treat it like it’s mine,” he said. “Those are the plays I have to make at this level.”

Following a 2023 season in which the Broncos exceeded low expectations, optimism is higher entering 2025. With the NFL schedule release set for Wednesday, Payton anticipates the team will have more nationally televised games, reflecting those elevated hopes.

“You embrace it,” Payton said. “It means you’re doing something right. It’s what drives competitors — being in the spotlight, carrying that legacy.”

  • Nearly 60 players took part in Saturday’s practice, including about 30 college tryout hopefuls. The Broncos are known for discovering undrafted talent, and Payton said a few could receive training camp invites.
  • Veteran linebacker Dre (name likely abbreviated) is recovering from injury and is on pace to be fully cleared for training camp, according to Payton.
