Oxford United v Reading: Police step up measures ahead of derby match

Police have announced the implementation of a comprehensive and strong security operation to prevent potential crowd disturbances ahead of the Thames Valley derby match. This initiative follows the arrest of 10 individuals before the previous encounter between Reading and Oxford United in December.

The upcoming League One match at Oxford’s Kassam Stadium on Saturday will feature various security measures, including dispersal orders, spotters, drones, and mounted officers. Thames Valley Police emphasized that these precautions are intended to guarantee a secure environment.

To manage potential issues, Section 35 and 60AA orders will be in effect from 08:00 GMT on matchday, granting authorities the authority to disperse troublemakers and take action against individuals attempting to conceal their identity.

Superintendent Adrian Hall stated that the majority of attendees are expected to be there to enjoy the football, with officers available throughout the day to address any questions or concerns. Collaboration with football clubs, partners, and local communities continues to be a priority to ensure a safe operation and mitigate the impact of those engaging in anti-social behavior.

In the previous match on December 12, arrests were made in Reading due to violent disorder. This fixture marked the first encounter between the rival teams since 2004.
