Kentucky’s recruiting battle with UCLA has Mick Cronin’s brother acting up online
As Mark Pope wars with Mick Cronin for a top recruit, the UCLA coach’s brother is sounding off all the while on social media.
Mark Pope’s recruitment of Nikola Kusturica has slowly become one of the more interesting, as well as grating, stories of the offseason. The 17-year old projected lottery pick was initially predicted to Kentucky, only for that prediction to be taken down and soon therafter replaced with a nod to UCLA. The loss, in this case, is less dire for the Cats than the subsequent vitriol that has resulted online.

Of course, the Big Blue Nation had plenty of fun in response, replying with things like “Will your brother know how to use this future lottery pick or push him farther and farther down the bench?” and “Is he gonna make Nikola retire too?”
The latter is reference to folks in the college basketball world pinning Donovan Dent’s retirement from basketball on Cronin’s rough coughing style, but that, too, can’t be evidenced. All we know is that Kusturica is favored to UCLA, and that Cats fans get at opposing fanbases better than anyone else.
Nikola Kusturica is Likely a Bruin
And with Kusturica likely ending up a Bruin, Kentucky will be left hanging in their ongoing pursuit of one more guy. Coach Pope has another spot remaining on his roster, and for him to swing for the fences with a potential future pro like Kusturica, he clearly isn’t comfortable settling even there.
Jokes aside, Kusturica is still an animal and should absolutely be missed. He just put up 27 points on 50% shooting from range in the U17 World Cup, an event that Krysten Peek reports the prospect is focused on prior to making his collegiate choice.
So what’s the move for Kentucky?
Well, besides having some good ol’ fashioned social media fun, it’d be best to focus on the group that Pope has already put together; a group that’s led by the nation’s top three-point shooter and anchored by one of the most exciting returning big men in college hoops.
If the Wildcats land another name, whether Kusturica or someone else, we’ll be sure to welcome that much more talent to Lexington. But for the time being, don’t expire on what this team already could be if all the pieces click.
