Mark Pope and Pat Kelsey have split the two of their head-to-head battles, with each head coach winning the contest held on their home floor. Kentucky won the first round, with Louisville exacting vengeance the following season to set up a pivotal third matchup this fall.
On the recruiting trail, however, the battles haven’t been particularly close. Though the blue and red have shared few targets since Pope and Kelsey were hired, every name as of late seems to opt for the school with less wins, championships, and general esteem. Don’t shoot the messenger.
First, it was De’Shayne Montgomery. Now, five-star center Obinna Ekezie Jr. is the latest to spurn the Big Blue Nation for the team down the road. Per Joe Tipton, the class-leading big man will reclassify to this coming season, and has officially committed to Louisville.

Ekezie Jr. will presumably come off the bench for the Cardinals; although, that’s only if Flory Bidunga doesn’t remain in the NBA Draft. That conclusion appears at least somewhat up in the air, for the time being.
Regardless of how Louisville uses him, though, Ekezie Jr. will slot in as a major piece for Pat Kelsey’s third team. That same team is set to visit Rupp Arena and, currently, Kentucky’s only answer at the five spot for Louisville’s potentially dominant frontcourt is Malachi Moreno.

And in the same vein, that’s assuming Moreno returns from draft consideration in his own right. To say that the Wildcats need a share of additional. help in the frontcourt would be an understatement; in putting an extended emphasis on the backcourt, Coach Pope may have sacrificed reliable depth on the other end of the lineup.
That is, unless the Cats dig deep in the transfer portal/internationally. Although it’s hard to wait and see while your bitter rival stacks up talent at their apparent will.
Cats Playing Catch-Up
It can be argued that Kentucky’s Diallo-Wilkins punch is stronger than Louisville’s own offerings in the backcourt but, overall, the red and black clearly have a stronger roster at the moment. Anything can happen in Rupp Arena, but the current outlook for Pope’s tie-breaking matchup with Louisville this fall is less than promising.
All the same, Kentucky still has money to spend and a fair share of targets in contention. One miss here doesn’t mean another hit won’t come. Although as time trudges along, the BBN can’t be blamed for feeling that way.
