The Detroit Red Wings are expected to make significant changes this offseason after missing the playoffs for the ninth consecutive year.
With over $21 million in projected salary cap space, per PuckPedia, NHL insider Jeremy Tingly of NHLTradeRumors suggests that Detroit could be a serious contender in a potential deal for Vancouver Canucks star Elias Pettersson.
“Detroit and Vancouver have prior trade history, and there’s reported frustration within the Red Wings roster over GM Steve Yzerman’s lack of action during the season,” Tingly noted. “Detroit is in need of offensive firepower, and Pettersson—still in his prime—could be a game-changer in the right environment. The Canucks may be on the verge of a partial rebuild, and Detroit’s stockpile of talented young players could entice Vancouver’s front office.”
Pettersson had a down year, finishing with 15 goals and 30 assists for 45 points in 64 games, while dealing with injuries. Despite the drop in performance, he has seven years remaining on an eight-year, $92.8 million contract and has proven elite upside—scoring 102 points two seasons ago and 89 last year. When healthy, he remains a top-tier NHL center.
