Breaking News: Astros Sign 28-Year-Old Free Agent Away from Rival Rangers
Monday was a big day for finding new minor-league free-agent signings on the official transactions log, and the Houston Astros made an intriguing one in mid-December. Jax Biggers, a 28-year-old infielder who the Texas Rangers selected in the eighth round of the 2018 draft, elected free agency in November after over seven years in his old organization. but for the most part, his OPS figures have been in the high six, low seven range. The Rangers made it fairly clear that they didn’t see Biggers as a big part of their future this past season, demoting him from Triple-A to Double-A for most of the season. The Astros initially assigned him to Triple-A Sugar Land,
but that assignment could change at the end of spring training. If we learned anything from the 2023 postseason, it’s that the Rangers and Astros love to have one up on each other. And although Houston has been the dominant American League team of the last decade,

the Rangers have still technically had the last laugh. Turning Biggers into a major league contributor might be a long shot, and it’s not exactly the same as beating the Rangers for the pennant. But if it happens, it would be a nice player development win for the Astros.
