JUST IN: Phillies Trade Idea Lands Twins’ $100 Million, 35-Home Run Outfielder

Phillies Trade Idea Lands Twins’ $100 Million, 35-Home Run Outfielder

LB’s Winter Meetings are just a few days away, which means rumors across baseball are starting to swirl, especially on the trade front. It is expected that some of the wildest offseason trades will take place during these meetings, where MLB executives across the league will meet with analysts and insiders.

Aside from the two big free agent decisions they have in Kyle Schwarber and Ranger Suarez, the Philadelphia Phillies could be in the trade market for a formidable outfielder. Outfield help has been on the wishlist for the Phillies for a while, but this offseason could finally be the time they finally pull it off. With the Minnesota Twins reportedly being open to trading star outfielder Byron Buxton, could a blockbuster trade happen?

Byron Buxton Reportedly Open to Waiving No-Trade Clause
With Byron Buxton’s seven-year, $100 million contract comes a no-trade clause.

ESPN’s Jeff Passan and Kiley McDaniel report that Byron Buxton may be a top trade candidate this offseason:

“Buxton is willing to waive his no-trade clause — and not just for Atlanta (he’s a Georgia native) — which puts the Twins in an interesting position. If the paucity of front-line free agent outfielders prompts a team to make an offer for Buxton, how seriously would Minnesota take it?”

The two MLB insiders then name the Phillies as a top landing spot.

Byron Buxton is the true five-tool outfielder that the Phillies are looking for, and his contract is actually fairly team-friendly when you look at his offensive production.

The two-time All-Star has 168 career home runs over parts of 11 seasons, and if the Phillies lose Harrison Bader in free agency, Buxton would immediately slot in as the team’s primary center fielder.

What Byron Buxton Brings + What the Phillies Would Have to Give Up?
The Minnesota Twins blew it up earlier this year at the trade deadline, and considering the organization’s financial debt, they may be doing the same this offseason. However, trading for Buxton would certainly cost a lot.

A good trade package would include either an infielder, Bryson Stott or Alec Bohm, a top prospect like Aidan Miller, and another lower-level prospect.

Buxton is coming off arguably his best season in MLB. In 2025, he smashed 35 home runs, drove in 83 runs, and posted an OPS+ of 136. The big deal is the fact that Buxton was able to stay on the field this season.

It was the first time since 2017 that he had played in 120+ games.

Injuries have always been the biggest concern for Buxton, as nobody has ever doubted his physical ability to play an extremely high level of defense and hit for tremendous power.
