Breaking News: Veteran Slugger Signs Another Mega Deal With Rangers Nation

Free agent projections are out, and so it is that time again — time for the annual “should the Rangers sign This Player” polls.

Today, we are looking at first baseman Pete Alonso.

Alonso is a 31 year old (as of next month) righthanded hitting first baseman who has spent his entire career with the New York Mets, having originally been drafted by them in the second round of the 2016 draft. He has a career .253/.341/.516 slash line and 135 OPS+ over seven seasons, with three seasons of a 122 to 123 OPS+, one season of a 133 OPS+, and three seasons of a 144 to 147 OPS+. Last year he slashed .272/.347/.524 in 709 plate appearances.

Alonso was not eligible to receive a qualifying offer, so there is no draft pick compensation attached to him.

Over at Fangraphs, Ben Clemens projects Alonso at 4 years, $120 million as the #7 free agent on their list, while the median crowdsource has Alonso at 4 years, $107 million. At ESPN, Kiley McDaniel has Alonso at #9, and projects him at 4 years, $110 million. Keith Law ranks Alonso at #7 on his list.
