DETROIT — The Detroit Tigers have signed veteran right-hander Tanner Rainey to a minor-league contract and assigned him to Triple-A Toledo.

Rainey, 32, made 11 appearances for the Pittsburgh Pirates earlier this season. More recently, he had been pitching for their Triple-A affiliate in Indianapolis.

Rainey has pitched in parts of eight big-league seasons, most notably with the Washington Nationals from 2019 to 2024. He has always posted impressive strikeout numbers — 27.7 percent for his career — but has also struggled with control.

Rainey was originally draftd by the Cincinnati Reds in the second round of the 2015 draft out of the University of West Alabama.
