Steelers Rumors: Pittsburgh Hosts Gabe Davis; Unlikely to Trade for Jonnu Smith
The Pittsburgh Steelers find themselves at a crossroads. While they remain one of the NFL’s most consistently competitive teams, concerns persist—particularly at quarterback and in their underpowered offense. In an effort to strengthen their receiving corps, the team is bringing in a potential playmaker for a visit.
According to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, the Steelers will host former Bills and Jaguars wide receiver Gabe Davis on Thursday. With Pittsburgh aiming to bolster its receiver depth, Davis’ visit signals that the team is actively exploring options to add more firepower.
The Steelers have also shown interest in Dolphins tight end Jonnu Smith. However, per Schefter, a trade for Smith is not expected to materialize.
These moves come after the Steelers traded wide receiver George Pickens to the Cowboys in May, creating a void at the position. Currently, their receiving group includes DK Metcalf, Robert Woods, and Calvin Austin III, with Pat Freiermuth at tight end.
Given the situation, it would be surprising if the Steelers don’t sign a player like Davis before training camp begins.
Contract Talks With T.J. Watt Still Ongoing
Meanwhile, the team remains locked in a contract negotiation with star pass rusher T.J. Watt. Entering the final year of his deal, Watt is pushing for an extension that would likely keep him in Pittsburgh long-term.
Although the Steelers have made an initial offer, Watt has yet to agree to the terms. Steelers insider Gerry Dulac of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reports that the team is likely to extend Watt before the regular season starts but cautioned that the process may face some obstacles.
With time still left in the offseason, there’s optimism that a deal will be finalized before training camp opens. However, the Steelers hope the situation doesn’t linger into the summer.
