Newcastle officials travel to see Getafe star with €25m release clause – Report

Earlier today’s reports suggest that Newcastle might also be searching for another midfielder this summer.

As it stands, it seems to be of lesser priority for the club compared to a right winger, centre-back, striker, and goalkeeper, but greater strength in depth is necessary.

As Sean Longstaff approaches the last year of his contract, he has been predicted to leave. Meanwhile, Crystal Palace is reportedly interested in Joe Willock, who has had a challenging year on Tyneside after leaving Arsenal.

Considering all of that, it’s intriguing to note that a certain La Liga player has been named as a possible target for Newcastle in today’s Spanish media.

Getafe stat observed?
Spanish reports suggest that Newcastle United have been closely monitoring Chrisantus Uche of Getafe.

As per a unique report from Football Espana, Toon scouts have traveled to Spain to observe the 22-year-old, who has drawn the attention of several Premier League teams as well as Atletico Madrid.

It is reported that Newcastle representatives were present in the stands to observe Uche during the closing months of the 2024/25 season, and that scouts from Aston Villa, Bournemouth, and Brentford have also evaluated the Nigerian player.

Uche’s adaptability could be attractive to Newcastle and Eddie Howe, given that the 6ft 3′ talent has played as a midfielder, winger, and striker in recent seasons.

Although it’s uncertain which position he will ultimately occupy, his €25m (£21m) release clause, commendable versatility, and four goals along with six assists in his inaugural full season in La Liga make him a player of interest for the club.

Depth must enhance The core of Newcastle’s squad is already impressive, comprising elite players like Sven Botman, two top-tier England full-backs, an exceptional midfield trio, and Alexander Isak—one of Europe’s most formidable forwards.

To avoid being caught off guard by the pressures of Champions League football, especially if we aim to compete in the league and across both domestic cup competitions in 2025/26, we need to enhance our depth.

As an example, Joelinton has been absent for 36% of our Premier League matches in the last two seasons, and his current backup is Joe Willock, who has been inconsistent and not performing well lately.

At the top, a comparable situation occurs: Callum Wilson is next in line if Isak falters. Meanwhile, there is a lack of depth behind Fabian Schar in the right-sided centre-back position.

It may be possible to sign a quality right winger and upgrade to a ball-playing Nick Pope, but addressing certain gaps in the squad will also be crucial, making players with Uche’s versatility especially attractive.
