Christian Walker, first baseman for the Houston Astros, is absent from the starting lineup in Thursday’s series opener versus the Tampa Bay Rays after being hit on his right hand by a 96 mph fastball the previous day.
Although the first moment caused worry, the X-rays were negative, and according to ESPN, the team is tentatively hopeful that it’s just a bruise.
Before the game, Astros manager Joe Espada confirmed that Walker is experiencing lingering soreness in his right hand, but there is no structural damage. The team is choosing to provide him with at least one day of rest, excluding him from the lineup while still viewing him as a possible option off the bench if necessary.
During Wednesday’s game, Walker was struck on the knuckle of his middle finger by a sinker thrown by Athletics starter Luis Severino. He remained in the game and completed the inning, but two innings later he was taken out as the discomfort increased.
Even though he was benched on Thursday, Walker was spotted engaging in light pregame defensive activities and had plans to take some swings. Whether he can return to the lineup on Friday or over the weekend will ultimately depend on his ability to throw and hit without limitations.
Astros Rely on Caratini for First Base
With Walker absent, Victor Caratini will take over at first base and occupy the cleanup spot in the batting order. This action aids in maintaining the Astros’ infield depth while allowing one of their most resilient players to recover. Having played first base occasionally this season, Caratini provides the Astros with a dependable fielder and a switch-hitting choice in the lineup’s heart.
This season, Walker has been a consistent presence in the Houston lineup, having started at first base in 54 of the team’s initial 55 games. Even though his offensive numbers are modest—he has a batting average of .212, an on-base percentage of .277, and seven home runs—his power potential and reliable defense are crucial elements of the Astros’ lineup.
Preventing a More Significant Setback It is a significant relief for an Astros team already dealing with injuries to important players that Walker avoided a fracture. As Yordan Alvarez is nearing his return from the IL, the Astros aim to maintain their lineup’s integrity as they enter a crucial summer period.
Walker’s status will be reevaluated before Friday’s game. Should the soreness lessen, he will likely rejoin the lineup in short order. For the time being, the Astros are opting for caution and expressing gratitude that what appeared frightening at first didn’t escalate into a more serious situation.
