It may not be long before there’s clarity on the future of Duke basketball transfer , one of its star players, as his stock continues to rise at the NBA Draft Combine.
Since he was transferred from Washington State and committed to Duke just two weeks ago, he has quickly become a hot name on draft boards — making it increasingly unlikely that he’ll suit up for the Blue Devils. He acknowledged that possibility during a press conference on Wednesday.
“I’m 100 percent focused on the draft,” he said in a video shared by Isaac Trotter on social media.
He added that he has been transparent with Duke head coach Jon Scheyer and the rest of the coaching staff, who are fully supportive of his pursuit of an NBA career. “This is my dream,” he said.
Coward had already impressed in workouts leading up to the Combine, and on Tuesday, he further boosted his draft profile with standout shooting performances and strong physical measurements. At 6-foot-6, he’s opted not to participate in the Combine’s 5-on-5 games but remains a notable presence — and the only major addition Duke made in the transfer portal this offseason.
Though Coward said he doesn’t need a guaranteed selection to stay in the draft, he plans to base his decision on the overall feedback he receives from NBA teams.
Still, he hasn’t completely closed the door on Duke.
“There’s a reason I picked them,” Coward said when asked how Duke could help him improve his draft stock if he chose to play college basketball next season.
