Dansby Swanson and Seiya Suzuki each hit two-run homers to cap a five-run fifth inning that powered the Chicago Cubs to a 5-2 win over the Miami Marlins on Monday night in the first game of a three-game series at Wrigley Field. Miguel Amaya had a perfect night at the plate, going 3-for-3 with two doubles and a run scored, while Swanson added another hit and Kyle Tucker contributed an RBI triple. With the victory, the Cubs set a new franchise mark by winning their seventh consecutive home series opener to start a season.
Colin Rea (3-0) earned the win, giving up two runs on six hits across 6 2/3 innings. Drew Pomeranz closed out the game with a scoreless ninth to notch his first save since 2020 and the 10th of his career.
Derek Hill homered for the Marlins, who have now dropped four of their last five games. Miami starter Cal Quantrill (2-4) took the loss, surrendering three runs on four hits over 4 1/3 innings, with two walks and a strikeout.
After being limited to one hit through the first four innings by Quantrill, the Cubs broke out in the fifth. Nico Hoerner began the surge with a single and a stolen base, followed by Swanson’s 400-foot homer, his ninth of the season, tying Francisco Lindor for most among MLB shortstops. Amaya doubled and later scored on Tucker’s triple to make it 3-0. Suzuki then launched his 10th home run, a 413-foot shot, extending the lead to 5-0. The Marlins answered with two runs in the seventh on Hill’s second homer, which brought in Ronny Simon after his base hit.
