JUST IN: St. Louis Cardinals Officially Part Ways With Willson Contreras After Contract Decline

St. Louis Cardinals third baseman Nolan Arenado reportedly blocked offseason trades to both the Los Angeles Angels and Houston Astros, but the team continues to explore options to trade him.

According to Bob Nightengale of USA Today, the Cardinals have been actively shopping Arenado throughout the regular season, but so far, no teams have shown serious interest.

Arenado, 34, is actually performing better this year compared to last season, with a .270 batting average, .352 on-base percentage, and a .426 slugging percentage — boosting his OPS to .778. Defensively, he remains elite, ranking in the 92nd percentile for Fielding Run Value and 95th for Outs Above Average.

Despite this, his no-trade clause halted potential moves to the Angels and Astros, and a possible deal with the Boston Red Sox fell through after they signed Alex Bregman.

Arenado’s contract includes $21 million in 2025, $16 million in 2026, and $15 million in 2027, with deferred payments extending through 2041 — a financial commitment that’s reportedly turning teams like the New York Yankees away.

Cardinals' Willson Contreras gets updated injury timeline

The Cardinals started looking to trade Arenado back in November, but unless they agree to eat a significant portion of his contract, it appears unlikely they’ll find a trade partner willing to take him on.

Would you like a list of realistic trade destinations for Arenado given his performance and contract?
